The Kaibartas: A Fishing Community of Assam, Their Society and Economy

The Kaibartas are one of the sixteen Scheduled Castes of Assam. Fishing is considered to be the primary occupation of the Kaibartas. The present work was undertaken among the Kaibartas of Boripara village, nearby Guwahati city in Kamrup District, Assam. The society and economy of these people and the occupational changes noticed among them due to the impact of urbanization is discussed in this paper.
